CAPTURING NATURE IN PAINT

If Robin Hill hadn’t "gone walkabout” in his native Australia, he might have been a very different painter. His early training, which began at ageDrawing, painting and closely observing nature laid a foundation for my career as a natural history painter and writer. 11, was at the Wimbledon School of Art in England, followed by full-time courses at the National Gallery Painting School and the Royal Melbourne Technical College in Australia.

“I got tired of school partway through, and I ‘went bush.’ I worked as a cowboy on a sheep and cattle station, and then I travelled the country working in shearing sheds. During this time, I was drawing, painting and closely observing nature, which laid a foundation for what was to become my career as a natural history painter and writer.” Robin ultimately returned to art school and completed his studies, and has gone on to amass a catalog of work that ranges from small book and magazine illustrations to watercolor and gouache triptychs nine feet in length. He has also written and illustrated many books on wildlife. While interest in his work spans the globe, his 200 paintings of North American birds became the founding catalyst for the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA.

Indeed, it is the natural world that continues to captivate Robin, and that’s why he is enthused about his relationship with Studio E. “Electronic communication is not my world; I’m not technically inclined. I know Studio E can facilitate this for me, and I can get on with my painting.”
