FOUND AND NOT FORGOTTEN

What makes Brece’s work memorable is its foundation in the forgotten. Her drawings, sculptures and installations are the artistic result of her efforts as a sort of historical detective. “My process involves uncovering and recovering facts and people often misplaced My process involves uncovering and recovering facts and people often misplaced or overshadowed, researching and investigating these facts, and then making work directly based on that research.or overshadowed, researching and investigating these facts, and then making work directly based on that research.” By bringing her creative attention to cast-off objects and forgotten people, Brece makes what was rendered useless useful once again.

Brece calls an old farmhouse in New England home, and the natural beauty that surrounds her there is yet another inspiration for her work. “The natural world creeps into my studio both in imagery and in the materials I use.  Currently, I am making a series of works on paper using an eco-print process, which involves dyeing the paper with weeds and leaves, and then drawing and stitching onto the paper.”

While Brece’s work honors the past, her own collection is replete with pieces by living artists whom she knows personally. She dearly values these friendships, and looks forward to building the same kind of relationships through her involvement with Studio E. “In our age of mechanized, distanced communication, Studio E will facilitate a personal connection between me and the people who collect my work.”
